Palamidi

The castle of Palamidi resides on a high hill overlooking all of Nafplion. It was first fortified by the Venetians during the occupation of the late 17th century. In 1715 it was captured by the Turks until it was liberated by the Greeks in 1822. In addition it is also the location of the prison of Greek Rebel Kolokotronis, and we got the opportunity to step inside his tiny jail cell.

The views from the top were absolutely breathtaking! You could see the entire town of Nafplion and out to the sea with the mountains in the background. It is hard to imagine such a beautiful place as the grounds for fighting. I was adventurous and walked down the 900+ steps into Nafplion and then rewarded myself with a swim!
